The Meditative Mindset

Updated: Aug 31

With the fast-paced lifestyles that are available, the path toward grounding, stability, and safety are always at the top of my list for rebalancing my energy. While there are many ways to explore recentering oneself, meditation is something that I continually engage in for facilitation, peace, and purpose. While traditionally meditation may be done in a seated position by focusing the mind into a trance-like state of calm and clarity, meditation can actually happen anywhere, at any time. I practice meditation in line at the grocery store, while I am in training in my running, biking, or swimming, throughout the day as I contemplate decisions, and anytime I need a reminder to put down the heavy things I am carrying in my energy.

One way I use meditation is to practice awareness surrounding my thoughts and emotions. The emotions fluctuate, just like waves in the sea, up and down. Sometimes, the waves are gentle and calm, and sometimes the waves are fast and quick, just like emotions. Whenever I am feeling a fluctuation in my emotions, I like to play a game with myself and bring awareness to my emotions. I do this by noticing that my breathing has changed, perhaps being more rapid, or slower. Perhaps I notice that my heart is beating faster. There may be other signs as well, where I notice that my body is tensing up in certain areas. Throughout all of this, I practice holding a space of curiosity. Instead of reacting out of impulse, I try to identify the emotions that are coming up.

In addition, I pause and just allow myself to have this experience, without taking it on. For myself, this means that while I recognize the emotions coming up, I also understand that just because my emotions are rising, that I am not my emotions. Emotions are messengers, just trying to deliver a message to me. In this way I feel the fluctuations, practice observing, and know that there is a coded message that my emotions are trying to deliver to me. Can I decipher the message? That is the game! In this way, my mindset turns toward curiosity so that I can facilitate myself back into calm, clarity, and safety.

While this can be a great method to practice, there are so many other ways that meditation can be done! Here are some other potential benefits of having a meditative mindset:

  • Deeper Sense of Self

  • Improved Focus and Mental Agility

  • Improved Sleep

  • Enhanced Self-Awareness

  • Potential for Decreased Amygdala Activity

  • Harnessing Impulsive Thinking and Reactions

  • Greater Sense of Self-Control

By practicing a meditative mindset, one may bring more awareness to thoughts, catching them before they spiral. One may also be able to facilitate a wide array of positive shifts that contribute to overall wellbeing and happiness. In practicing different types of meditation, I personally have experienced a sense of purpose and intention in my daily life. While it is always best to consult your primary care physician when beginning a new program, and meditation is not to replace therapy, it may help one to release stress, rebalance the mind, and facilitate a deeper sense of self-connection!
