Studying the movement of the planets and the stars has been going on for centuries and in ancient times astrology and astronomy were inseparable. While modern astrology uses your sun sign as your personality, we stick to ancient tradition and use your ascendant (your rising sign). Your ascendant tells your personality as you came on to the planet and is the astrological sign on the eastern horizon when you were born. Many that follow ancient astrology see the ascendant as the core of the chart, as this is the lens that you see the world through, how you view life, where you may project from, and we look to the sign and its ruler to determine this. Your ascendant affects everything else in your chart and "touches" the other placements. The ascendant gives you your main appearance, how you facilitate through life, and if you take a more head-on approach or laid back method. While the other signs and houses need to be analyzed and understood to get a more in depth picture, much can be gleaned from just the ascendant in your chart (as well as your South Node, which has to do with past lives and patterns of behavior that we have learned).
